A Short History of Nunivak Island
60° 05’ 42” N, 166° 12’ 40” W
LOCATED IN THE BERING SEA, about thirty miles off the coast of mainland Alaska, Nunivak Island is a permafrost-covered volcanic island. The village of Mekoryuk, located on the north shore, is the island’s only permanent settlement, with a population of about two hundred residents. The rest of the island is wilderness.
The inhabitants of Nunivak Island are mostly Cup’ik Eskimos. Famed photographer Edward S. Curtis took a series of photographs of the local people in the 1920s, showing scenes of fishing, kayaking, and other aspects of daily life.
The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, the second-largest national wildlife refuge in the United States, includes Nunivak Island as part of its territory. The refuge conserves a wide array of shorebirds, seabirds, whistling swans, Canada geese, and marine mammals. Most notable of the island’s wildlife may be its herd of musk ox, which were introduced from Greenland in 1935 after the local Alaskan musk ox became extinct. They have been used as breeding stock to reestablish herds elsewhere throughout the region and can be seen wandering about many parts of the 1,700-square-foot island.
